Sofia Cherif Essakali: Morocco’s Rising Golf Star

At just 17, Sofia Cherif Essakali is already on a remarkable trajectory. Revealed early on through standout performances, she is now emerging as one of golf’s most promising young talents. A regular competitor in the Lalla Meryem Cup, where she has made the cut at every appearance, she continues to demonstrate both maturity and consistency on particularly demanding courses. Balancing her studies with her rise on the international stages, the young champion is moving forward with rare determination, driven by an ambition and discipline already worthy of the very best.

How did you start playing golf?

I started playing golf when I was eight. One day, I went to hit a few balls with my mother out of curiosity… and I instantly loved it. I kept playing regularly, and very quickly realised that this sport would become a central part of my life.

What role has the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation played in your journey?

The Federation, under the Presidency of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, has supported me from the very beginning. It has given me the opportunity to compete in many international tournaments, which has been key to my development. That support plays an essential role in my progress and allows me to keep improving with confidence.

Do you remember your first major emotional moment on a golf course?


I remember it very clearly. I was 11 and had just won an important tournament. I felt both very stressed and incredibly happy. It is a powerful memory that left a deep impression on me and strengthened my motivation going forward.

How do you manage to balance your studies and your sporting career?


It is not always easy, as golf requires a great deal of time and commitment. I try to stay well organised day to day to find the right balance between my studies, training and competitions.

What does the Lalla Meryem Cup represent for you?


The Lalla Meryem Cup is an iconic tournament for women’s golf in Morocco. I first played in it when I was 13, and returning is always very special. Playing in Morocco, surrounded by people who support me, gives me extra motivation to keep improving. I truly enjoy both the course and the atmosphere of the tournament..

Beyond competition, what does golf bring to you?


Golf brings me a great deal, both as an athlete and as a person. It has taught me patience, discipline and concentration. I also value the connection with nature, as well as the simple pleasure of walking and taking my time.

What message would you give to young people who are not yet familiar with the sport?


I would simply tell them to try it at least once. Golf is a fascinating sport that teaches you a lot while still being fun. Many young people would truly love it if they gave it a chance.
