From May 1st to 10th, 2026, the International Publishing and Book Fair transforms Rabat into a vast landscape of discovery, rediscovery and encounter.
Amid the thousands of pages, voices and worlds that come together, we invite you to explore the work of Driss Chraïbi, whose centenary is being marked this year with a tribute and the publication of an anthology, and to encounter Soundouss Chraïbi and Samira El Ayachi, two voices who, each in her own way, embody the vitality of contemporary Moroccan literature.
This spring marks the opening of a year of commemoration dedicated to Driss Chraïbi, on the centenary of his birth.
Following an artistic tribute in El Jadida, his hometown, the International Publishing and Book Fair in Rabat will host several round-table discussions in his honour.
To accompany this tribute, a boxed set of seven of his major novels is being released in both French and Arabic.
An invitation to discover or rediscover a major literary figure, born on 15 July 1926 and who passed away in 2007.
A celebration that is both fitting and meaningful, as his work remains strikingly relevant
Driss Chraïbi holds a central place in Moroccan literature written in French.
Several of his novels are still taught today in schools and universities across many countries. Kacem Basfao, historian of Maghrebi literature and a leading specialist of his work, describes him as “a universal classic and a forerunner of contemporary thought”.
In the postface to the boxed set published by the Moroccan Community Abroad Council, he also refers to him as “a free man”. This spirit of freedom runs through his entire work, a writing style that challenges, opens new paths and explores unexpected territories.
From Le Passé simple (The Simple Past), published in 1954, he sparked controversy, disrupted the patriarchal order, exposed social hypocrisies and questioned the weight of rigid traditions, while bringing to the fore, with unprecedented force, the voice of the individual in Moroccan literature. Book after book, he continued to expand the field of possibilities

The breadth of themes and worlds explored by Driss Chraïbi throughout his work is striking. A writer of intimate revolt, he is also a chronicler of historical fractures and collective wounds. With Les Boucs (The Butts), published in 1955, he offers a pioneering and lucid portrayal of North African immigration in France. With La Civilisation, ma Mère!… (Mother Comes of Age!…), he addresses women’s emancipation with a tender sense of playfulness, ahead of its time. In Succession ouverte, he explores lineage, return to the homeland, memory and all that we carry within us, often without fully realising it.
Driss Chraïbi defies classification. Novelist, satirist, visionary, memoirist, essayist, radio personality and writer for young audiences, he navigates effortlessly across forms and registers. From the philosophical novel L’Âne to the political critique of La Foule, from the lyrical love of Mort au Canada to the Amazigh-inspired works Une enquête au pays (Flutes of Death), La Mère du printemps (Mother Spring) and Naissance à l’aube (Birth at Dawn), he continually revisits new territories, exploring the origins, history and deep roots of Morocco.
This is complemented by L’Homme du Livre, a singular spiritual work, as well as the delightful Inspector Ali series, where humour, imagination and irony become powerful, and often very serious, ways of deciphering the world.

In Driss Chraïbi’s work, gravity is never burdensome. Humour runs throughout his writing, by turns sharp, gentle, biting or playful.
It lightens without diminishing, and allows him to address injustice, power, domination and the fractures of the century with remarkable freedom of tone.
It is this combination of depth, irreverence and inventiveness that makes his work more alive than ever.
So, which book should be recommended to those discovering Driss Chraïbi for the first time? The answers are many.
One may begin with the revolt of Le Passé simple, the question of migration in Les Boucs (The Butts), the exuberance of La Civilisation, ma Mère!… (Mother Comes of Age!…), the playful investigations of Inspector Ali, the narratives of memory, or the lyrical return to nature and origins.
There is no single key, but a multitude of doors, each leading to a body of work that accompanies, moves and sometimes challenges the reader, while inviting reflection on the past, the present and the future.
